Where The Storms At?!?

Welcome to Current Connections, the weekly newsletter for Lineman, by a Lineman

Hey there pole dancer, welcome to your 5 minute newsletter about cool shit happening “On the Line.” Made by your bucket buddy, Barnyard, a JL out of Detroit.

How’s your week shaping up? We just got trimmed down to 5, 10s—no complaints here! It’s given me some much-needed time with the family, and just in time for our Local Lineman Rodeo last weekend! The Hall was buzzing with excitement, and I took the crew (family), to watch the action and enjoy the day.

We’d love to hear how your week went—drop us a line and share your stories! But before we gear up for the weekend, let’s dive into what this issue has in store:

  • 🌩️ Where in the eff is the weather?!

  • 💡 The King of the Street (Lights)

  • 🤯 “It’ll Hold?”

  • 🧐 Check the Books!

“If I have to do it, than what do I need you for?”

🌪️ Storms Storms Storms!

Over the past month, the U.S. has experienced significant storm activity, particularly in the Atlantic hurricane season. One of the most notable events was Hurricane Beryl, which became the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record for the Atlantic basin.

Beryl caused widespread damage across several Caribbean islands before making a second landfall in Texas, resulting in devastating flooding and numerous fatalities.

Additionally, Tropical Storm Debby impacted the Southeast U.S., making landfall in Florida and then again in South Carolina, causing severe flooding and tornadoes along its path (NOAA) (FOX Weather).

Looking ahead, the outlook for the next two months remains concerning. The Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks in September, is expected to continue being very active due to factors like warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures and reduced wind shear.

NOAA has forecasted up to 24 named storms, with several more potentially becoming hurricanes. The conditions remain favorable for more intense storms, particularly as La Niña may develop, which could further reduce wind shear and enhance storm formation (FOX Weather) (SPC).

This ongoing activity suggests that communities, especially along the Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard, should remain vigilant and prepared for more severe weather in the coming months.

💡Father’s of the Trade:

Charles F. Brush was an important inventor who made big strides in the world of electricity. He created the first electric street lighting system using arc lights, which were much brighter than regular light bulbs.

Linemen play a key role in maintaining the electric systems that power these lights, thanks to Brush’s innovations. His work helped pave the way for modern electrical systems.

Brush didn’t stop with just street lighting. He also invented the first electric dynamo, a machine that could generate electricity more efficiently. This invention was critical because it allowed for the production and distribution of electricity over larger areas, making it possible to power entire neighborhoods and cities.

Brush's innovations helped shape the early electrical industry, creating new opportunities for jobs and technology. His work laid the foundation for the development of more advanced electrical systems that linemen now manage and repair.

Thanks to Brush, the electric grid became a reality, and linemen became essential workers in keeping our communities powered and connected. His contributions continue to have a lasting impact on the world of electricity and the linemen who help maintain it.

JNCTN is a company specializing in digital identity and credential management. Their platform helps organizations transition from paper-based verification processes to a digital system, allowing for secure and efficient management of employee credentials.

JNCTN's solutions are used across various industries to ensure that the right people with the right qualifications are in the right locations, streamlining compliance, onboarding, and credential verification. The platform also offers features like automated notifications, real-time monitoring, and easy integration with existing systems.

The plan is for them to be a partnership with the man power. There’s an app in development, being built with the Lineman in mind. The IBEW isn’t partnered up yet, but hopefully soon.

⚡Tips when throwing doors⚡

  • Make sure you’re a safe distance away, arc’s can generate crazy heat.

  • To piggy back on that ^ Always use a stick, never your hand or hammer to pick up load.

  • Not a bad practice to tilt your head down or away, just make sure you’re keeping your eyes on what you’re doing.

  • Breath in and hold your breath when closing: if there is an arc, your body’s first response will be to exhale, not inhale the heat.

  • Always treat the switching as if you expect it to fail.
