šŸ‘·Labor Day: the one day we work hard at hardly working!

Welcome to Current Connections, the weekly newsletter for Lineman, by a Lineman

In Partnership With

Hey there pole dancer, welcome to your 5 minute newsletter about cool shit happening ā€œOn the Line.ā€ Made by your bucket buddy, Barnyard, a JL out of Detroit.

Hope everyone had a great holiday! I know the day off was much appreciated after working storm for 5 days straight. On that note: thank you to everyone that came to the D to help with the restoration effort. It only took six days to restore just over 200k customers. You guys are bad ass, and we appreciate the help. If it was your first time working on a Delta System, I hope you were safe and got to see some cool shit.

Weā€™d love to hear how your week wentā€”drop us a line and share your stories! But before we gear up for the weekend, letā€™s dive into what this issue has in store:

  • šŸŒ©ļø Do we need to pack our bags?

  • šŸ’” Donā€™t Blow Your Fuse!

  • šŸ“· Pic of the week

  • šŸ”„ Welcome to Detroit City

  • šŸ§ Check the Books!

ā˜”Donā€™t Get Your Hopes Up

Currently, the Gulf of Mexico is seeing some tropical activity that could potentially develop into a tropical depression by early to mid-next week. A tropical disturbance near the Yucatan Peninsula is moving into the southwestern Gulf, where conditions might become favorable for it to strengthen. The National Hurricane Center has given it a medium chance of development over the next several days.

Additionally, another system that has been causing heavy rain along the Gulf Coast is no longer expected to develop into a tropical depression, but it will continue to bring significant rainfall to areas like Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and parts of Florida through the weekendā€‹

It's important to stay updated on these developments as they can still impact weather conditions, even if they don't fully develop into hurricanes.

Looking ahead, the Atlantic hurricane season is expected to remain very active over the next two months, with warm ocean temperatures and favorable atmospheric conditions likely to produce more storms. Communities in hurricane-prone areas should stay prepared for potential impacts.

šŸ’”Fatherā€™s of the Trade:

Herman Sperry made a big difference in the field of electricity by inventing the first fuse for power lines. This invention was a game-changer for linemen because it made working with electrical systems much safer. Fuses prevent overloads that could cause fires or damage equipment, protecting both the linemen and the electrical grid.

In addition to inventing the fuse, Herman Sperry's work helped set the foundation for modern electrical safety standards. Fuses became a crucial component in preventing electrical accidents by automatically cutting off the power when the current became too strong. This not only protected the equipment but also saved countless lives by reducing the risk of fires and electrocution.

Sperry's innovation was especially important for linemen, who work directly with high-voltage power lines. With fuses in place, linemen had a much safer environment to perform their critical work. This advancement allowed the power industry to grow rapidly while maintaining higher safety standards.

JNCTN is a company specializing in digital identity and credential management. Their platform helps organizations transition from paper-based verification processes to a digital system, allowing for secure and efficient management of employee credentials.

JNCTN's solutions are used across various industries to ensure that the right people with the right qualifications are in the right locations, streamlining compliance, onboarding, and credential verification. The platform also offers features like automated notifications, real-time monitoring, and easy integration with existing systems.

The plan is for them to be a partnership with the man power. Thereā€™s an app in development, being built with the Lineman in mind. The IBEW isnā€™t partnered up yet, but hopefully soon.

Take my Picture!

Some of my favorite days are the ones when we get paired up with another crew. Itā€™s always a great time when you and your friends get to tag team a pole together, and itā€™s always better when you each get your own bucket to it!

āš”Delta Systems (Working Detroit)āš”

  • Understand the System Configuration: In a delta system, the phases are connected in a triangle (delta) configuration, and there is typically no neutral wire.

  • Understand Ground Fault Indications: In an ungrounded delta system, ground faults do not immediately trip breakers, leading to a situation where one phase could be shorted to ground without causing an outage.

  • Verify Your Isolation: Itā€™s super common, especially in the city, for their to be multiple cans paralleled together through both the primary and secondary. Make sure to check that the secondary dog bones/johnny balls arenā€™t jumpered or fused.

  • Wear your Rubbers! As noted above (and the video below), primary can still be hot while on the ground or a fence. Make sure youā€™re wearing your gloves when patrolling/going into back yards.

  • Donā€™t Trust the Maps: This is more specific to Detroit property, but the circuit maps are often out of date or inaccurate. Always verify with your eyes.
